Person suffering from hallux rigidusWhat is Hallux Rigidus?

Hallux rigidus is a type of arthritis that affects the metatarsophalangeal joint which lies at the base of the hallux. Plainly put, it is inflammation of the joint at the base of your big toes.

It is also the most common musculoskeletal degenerative (arthritic) condition affecting the toes. It is estimated that roughly 1 in 40 people over 50 years old suffer from it. It is found more often in women than men and typically develops in people past the age of 30.

Causes

While the exact cause of hallux rigidus is unknown, there are several common factors that are known to contribute to it. They include:

  • Overuse of the big toe during prolonged periods on feet
  • Unusual foot anatomy
  • Injury to the big toe
  • A genetic propensity
  • Disease such as osteoarthritis

Symptoms

Symptoms are similar to those of other arthritic conditions and include:

  • Pain in the area particularly when active
  • Swelling around the joint
  • Stiffness and difficulty bending or moving the toe
  • A bunion-like bump or bone spur on top of the joint

Diagnosing Hallux Rigidus

Often a physical exam is all that is needed to diagnose hallux rigidus. By seeing how much you can move the joint and where the pain happens, our chiropractor can pinpoint hallux rigidus. Also, the doctor will check for telltale bone spurs on the top of the joint.

In addition, imaging tests like x-rays may be used to determine the extent of degeneration in the joint. They need to be taken while standing with weight put on the toe in question and can indicate what form of treatment is most effective.

Treating Hallux Rigidus with Chiropractic

The first line of treatment for hallux rigidus is always non-surgical. Prior to trying the medications and injections suggested by traditional medicine, chiropractic management stresses non-invasive natural exercises and stretching. Through adjustments to the joint and these exercises, the pain and stiffness of hallux rigidus can be drastically reduced.

While there have been clinical studies demonstrating that the progress of HR can be assailed through chiropractic management techniques, there is no actual cure. The best that can be hoped for is to hold off the progression of the degeneration.
